Requires defeating the Four Kings, and requires that the player has NOT yet placed a Lord Soul in the Lordvessel at Firelink Altar for Kingseeker Frampt -- doing that first locks Kaathe out for that playthrough.

Death or hostility conditions

Becomes permanently hostile and leaves for that playthrough if the player instead places the Lordvessel for Kingseeker Frampt, or if attacked without provocation after that has happened. Not documented as directly killable outside that hostile state.

Keeps selling if hostile survives

not applicable -- his hostile state is described as permanent departure, not a survivable fight

Dialogue progression

After the Four Kings fall, he offers to transport the player to Firelink Altar and invites them to join the Darkwraith covenant for its life-draining power, which the player can accept or decline. Placing the Lordvessel for Frampt afterward instead permanently forecloses this path.
